You’re looking to lose weight, and you’ve heard that the grapefruit diet is good for losing weight. Fans of this diet claim that grapefruit has enzymes in it that help burn fat if eaten before other foods. This particular diet has also been around since the 1930’s.
The goal of this diet is quick weight loss. The cycle is ten to twelve days on and then two days off before you start another cycle. Some of the claims say that you’ll lose ten pounds in one cycle, or fifty-two pounds in two and a half months.
This diet is a high protein diet. The restrictions are that protein meals and starch meals be kept apart and drinking grapefruit juice with every meal. The reasoning behind the weight loss is that the fat burning enzymes are what causes the quick weight loss. The meals can have any amount of spices, salad dressing or butter that you want.
Science behind the diet
While this diet does work, there are some downsides to it. One is that the fat burning enzymes don’t have any research backing them up. The low calorie and low carb intake are the most probable reasons why the weight drops off. Losing ten pounds in twelve days makes it very likely that instead of losing fat you’re losing water weight and muscle.
Grapefruit interferes with prescription drugs
Another con is that grapefruit interferes with certain drugs. Some drugs like statins grapefruit increase the absorption rate which can lead to complications. Other drugs like antihistamines grapefruit result in lower absorption rates making the drugs less effective. This is something to keep in mind if you’re on any drug.

Grapefruit is good for you. It’s highly nutritious and is low in calories. So eating this fruit as often as you would like isn’t a bad thing. The grapefruit diet with the high cholesterol and saturated fats isn’t a good thing. It’s good for a quick weight loss before a vacation or a high school reunion; it’s not good for long term sustainability.

To lose weight and keep it off it goes back to eating healthy. A diet isn’t what you’re looking for; it’s a lifestyle change that gives the best results. Eating foods that are high in nutrients and low in calories are great for losing weight and giving your body what it needs to function.
Have lots of color on your plate
One of the recommendations that I’ve heard from many doctors is to have a lot of color on your plate because of the fruits and veggies you’re eating. The more color on your plate the more nutrients you’re eating. Also the more color on your plate the more fiber you’re eating which helps you feel full longer. Eating lean protein is also good because it’s a long-lasting energy source.
